Can't Shake The Depleted Evil Ones

I can't escape the feeling that the Red Sox, despite playing very well, are missing an opportunity to put some daylight between themselves and the Bronx Posers. Have you seen the line-up that Steinbrenner's Stooges are putting on the field these days? Let's look at the $200 million team that beat the Rangers on July 25th:

Cabrera LF, Jeter SS, Giambi DH, Rodriguez 3B, Posada C,
Guiel RF, Phillips 1B, Cairo 2B, Crosby CF.

Guiel, Phillips, Cairo and Crosby? Sounds like an over-the-hill 70s rock group on yet another "Final World Tour". Do you think they'll sing "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"? Are you kidding me? These stiffs are 2 1/2 games back of us? Not surprisingly, it's the pitching that has kept the Empire within striking distance—both starters and some of their bullpen (have you seen Scott Proctor's 99MPH fastballs lately?).

Bottom line: we have 9 more games with these guys in August and September—five here, four in the fashionable Bronx. It's a shame that we couldn't have made the gap wide enough for the late-season desperation to be on the other side for a change.

It also didn't help to have Al Nipper, '86 Arsonist, as Pitching Coach.
